The Why

The tritone root movement (C→F#) immediately destabilizes tonality. Diminished chords (F#dim, Bdim) create harmonic ambiguity — they function as "passing" chords that never resolve cleanly. The whole-tone flavor gives a "floating" quality. This is Jesper Kyd's signature approach in Hitman's tension cues.

Theory of Mysterious Music

Mystery is built on harmonic ambiguity. Tritone root movements (like C→F#) immediately destabilize the tonality — the ear cannot establish a "home." Diminished chords act as harmonic "question marks" because they resolve in multiple directions. Whole-tone harmony removes the sense of key entirely, making the listener feel "lost."
