The Why

Root movement in descending thirds (Cm→Ab, Eb→Cm) creates a sense of gravity and weight. The Picardy-third resolution to Eb major at the end provides triumphant lift. This structure is used in Zimmer's "Time" — minor tonic, relative major shift, suspended resolution through the VI chord.

Theory of Epic Music

Epic music relies on three core techniques: (1) Pedal points — a sustained bass note that anchors the harmony while chords change above, creating a sense of stability and scale. (2) Open fifths — removing the third from chords creates ambiguity and "space" that sounds vast. (3) Delayed resolution — suspending the final cadence builds anticipation, making the eventual release feel triumphant.
