Synthwave
Electronic music inspired by 1980s film soundtracks and video games. Synthesizers, gated reverb, nostalgic, cinematic atmosphere.
Characteristic: Retro
The Why
Synthwave harmony i–VI–VII–v–iv–i–V7–i, borrowed from 1980s pop. The minor tonic, major submediant (F), and major flat seventh (G) create a bittersweet, nostalgic quality. The v chord (Em) instead of V keeps it modal (Aeolian). Gated reverb on drums and a walking bassline complete the "Miami Vice" sound.
Harmonic Analysis
Synthwave harmony is built on minor key progressions (Aeolian and Dorian) evoking bittersweet nostalgia. The i–VI–VII pattern is the genre's "signature" — borrowed from 1980s tracks. The bass plays octave patterns (root–octave–root–octave) on synthesized bass. Gated reverb on drums (the "Phil Collins sound") is mandatory. Arpeggiated synth pads and pentatonic lead melodies complete the sound.
